Tax accountant salary starts around $67,250 and reaches $96,000 on Robert Half’s 2027 national range for a tax accountant, with a $78,500 midpoint. The federal median for all accountants and auditors, the group tax accountants are counted in, was $83,680 in May 2025. Your pay climbs with each rung of the ladder, and a tax manager’s range tops out at $151,250.

How Much Do Tax Accountants Make?

You can start with what the government publishes. It has no separate line for tax accountants, so the closest match is accountants and auditors, and every figure in this table covers that whole group.

How Much Do Tax Accountants Make?
Measure (May 2025)Amount
Median pay, all accountants and auditors$83,680
Lowest 10 percent earned under$56,020
Highest 10 percent earned over$144,090
Median in accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll services$81,490
Median in finance and insurance$93,290
Median for all occupations$50,980

You can see the spread. If you’re early in your career, you’ll sit near the bottom of that range, and a manager sits near the top. The state table below this article shows the same group state by state, so you can check your own state there.

How Much Does Pay Rise From Tax Associate to Director?

For the rungs in between, you need a salary guide. Robert Half, a staffing firm, publishes ranges you can look up for each job title. Its pages say the numbers are projections for 2027 based on actual compensation for professionals it has placed nationwide, plus third-party job posting data.

How Much Does Pay Rise From Tax Associate to Director?
Job title (2027 national range)LowMidpointHigh
Tax accountant$67,250$78,500$96,000
Senior tax accountant$86,750$105,250$119,750
Tax manager$112,250$132,000$151,250
Tax director$142,500$176,000$218,250

Robert Half defines the tiers this way, and you can match yourself to one. Low means you’re new to the role or have limited experience. Mid means moderate experience and maybe relevant certifications. High means extensive experience, advanced skills and often specialized certifications or industry experience.

That last point matters for you. The same title can pay very differently depending on which tier you fit, so a range tells you more than any single average.

Reading the Ladder as a Timeline

Pair the pay table with the experience employers ask for, and you get a rough timeline. Robert Half says companies seek senior tax accountants with at least three years of tax experience. It says tax managers should have five to seven years, with at least two supervising.

So you could picture the midpoints as milestones. You’d start at the $78,500 midpoint as a tax accountant. Then you’d reach $105,250 as a senior, $132,000 as a manager and $176,000 as a director. Real careers don’t move that neatly, and the tiers overlap. A high-tier senior tops out at $119,750, above the $112,250 low for a manager.

What the 2026 Public Accounting Projection Adds

Robert Half’s earlier guide split public accounting into more titles. Going Concern, an accounting news site, reprinted the 2026 projections for you to compare. They use different titles and a different year, so we keep them in a separate table.

What the 2026 Public Accounting Projection Adds
Job title (2026 public accounting projection)LowMidpointHigh
Tax associate$57,750$71,000$84,000
Senior tax associate$77,000$95,250$108,750
Tax manager$102,000$121,500$141,250
Senior tax manager$115,000$130,500$145,750
Tax director$141,000$180,500$220,000

Going Concern also reported a 3.7% average increase projected for public accounting roles in tax and audit. That’s a projection, not a promise, but it tells you employers were budgeting for raises.

How Reliable Are These Salary Numbers?

You’re looking at four different kinds of numbers, and each one answers a different question.

Federal figures come from the government’s wage statistics program, and they cover whole occupations. They’re the most solid numbers you can lean on, but they don’t split out tax work. Robert Half’s ranges come from a recruiter’s own placements and job postings, so they lean toward the jobs it fills.

A posted range is what one employer plans to pay for one job you might apply for. School-reported figures come from graduates who answered a survey, and often from a minority of them. Portland State, for example, says its salary data came from 27.3% of employed graduates.

None of that makes the numbers wrong. It means you should use them as a range and not a promise.

What Does a Tax Associate Make?

This is the entry-level question, and it deserves its own answer. You can triangulate it from three sources.

Robert Half’s 2026 projection for public accounting tax associates runs from $57,750 to $84,000, with a $71,000 midpoint. Its 2027 range for a tax accountant starts at $67,250. An RSM tax associate posting for Los Angeles lists $74,800 to $89,250 and says pay reflects education, skills, work experience, certifications and location.

Schools add their own starting figures. Portland State reports an average starting salary of $80,200 for its Master of Taxation class of 2025. Its program review covers the rest of what you’d get from the program.

A quick caution about titles. At law firms, a tax associate is a junior lawyer, since BLS says newly hired attorneys usually start as associates. The federal median for all lawyers was $159,670 in May 2025. See the tax attorney salary guide if that’s your path.

How Much Do Tax Managers Make?

Managers have the widest spread, as you’ll notice in postings, because an in-house role and a firm role pay differently. Three Connecticut postings on Robert Half’s site show the range. They illustrate the market and don’t describe all of it.

How Much Do Tax Managers Make?
Posted rolePosted payWhat it asked for
Corporate tax manager, Torrington$125,000 to $165,000 baseMulti-entity compliance across federal, state and local taxes
Corporate tax manager, Greenwich$150,000 to $160,000 plus bonusReports to the chief financial officer; owns the tax calendar
Senior tax manager at a CPA firm, New Haven$130,000 to $150,0008 to 10 or more years in public accounting and an active CPA license

Directors and vice presidents of tax lead a company’s tax function, which puts them closest to financial managers in the federal data. BLS reports a median of $166,570 for financial managers, and that group includes controllers and treasurers. It’s the closest federal match, so you shouldn’t read it as a tax director median.

How Does Tax Pay Compare With Other Jobs?

You can put the federal matches side by side. Each one covers a whole occupation, so use them to see the order of magnitude and not the exact pay for your job.

How Does Tax Pay Compare With Other Jobs?
If your goal isClosest federal groupMedian, May 2025
Tax accountantAccountants and auditors$83,680
Tax attorneyLawyers$159,670
Tax director or vice president of taxFinancial managers$166,570

Accountants and auditors earn well above the all-occupation median, and the climb to director or attorney roughly doubles it. If the legal route interests you, the tax attorney salary guide breaks that path down.

What Raises a Tax Accountant Salary?

Five things move your number, and each one shows up in the sources.

Your credentials come first. BLS says CPA certification may improve your job prospects. Robert Half says senior tax accountants who’ve earned a CPA or MBA have an advantage, and that companies place a premium on tax managers with a CPA, an MBA or a master’s in taxation.

Your specialty is next. PwC lists tax areas such as transfer pricing and tax financial markets and real estate. Robert Half lists transfer pricing and tax provision among tax manager skills, and the Greenwich posting asks for international tax, so a specialty can open higher-paying roles for you.

The type of employer you pick matters too. The BLS medians above show a gap between accounting and tax preparation firms and finance and insurance. Corporate roles can also add bonuses, as one posting does.

Where you live counts as well. The same federal group earns different medians from state to state, and the state table below shows where your own state sits.

Last, your experience. Robert Half’s tier definitions tie the high end to extensive experience, which is why the same title spans such a wide range.

Does Tax Pay More Than Audit?

It has for a long time, according to one commenter on the Going Concern article, who said tax has paid more than audit for decades. The commenter’s explanation was that fewer graduates prefer tax, so firms offer more to attract them. That’s one reader’s opinion.

You’ll see the projections point the same way. In Robert Half’s 2026 table, the tax associate midpoint is $71,000 and the audit associate midpoint is $65,000. The audit associate range runs from $53,750 to $76,500.

If you’re choosing between the two, don’t stop at the starting number. Look at the hours, the specialty you’ll build and the credentials each path asks for. Our tax accountant career guide covers the tax side in detail.

What Else Is in a Tax Accountant Salary Package?

Base salary isn’t the whole offer, so read each posting for the rest. The Greenwich corporate tax manager role adds a bonus on top of its base range. The New Haven senior tax manager posting lists health benefits, a 401k and paid time off.

The Greenwich posting also lists medical, dental and vision coverage, retirement plans, paid vacation, sick days and holidays. RSM says it offers a competitive benefits and compensation package to all its people.

When you compare two offers, line up the whole package. Ask about bonuses, retirement matching and tuition support. If a firm will help pay for a master’s, ask whether it comes with a commitment to stay, so you know what you’re agreeing to.

Is a Master’s in Taxation Worth the Cost?

The plain answer is that no independent source puts a dollar value on the degree, so weigh these instead.

On cost, the median program among the 78 we track runs 30 credits. Its total tuition is $37,650, and the median cost per credit is $1,252. Portland State’s 45-credit program costs about $35,954 full-time for Oregon residents, a figure the school publishes.

If cost is your main filter, our cheapest master’s in taxation list is the place to start. And the University of Alabama’s Master of Tax Accounting considers every admitted applicant for a graduate assistantship, which can offset your tuition.

On pay, schools report strong outcomes. Portland State says specializing in tax tends to pay off, with 85% of graduates fully employed within six months. It adds that 43% reported a promotion, a new employer or a new function in that window.

Golden Gate University says its taxation graduates earn 23% more than the national median for the field. You can read its M.S. in Taxation review. Both are school claims.

Our own data adds a federal angle. College Scorecard field earnings are on record for 29 programs, with a median of $114,544. Among the 25 programs that aren’t Master of Laws (LL.M.) degrees, the median is $111,838. These are field-level earnings at each school, so they’re context and not a forecast of what you’d earn.

Forum posters split. One reader said it’s a no-brainer if the firm covers 80% of the cost, especially in tax. Another poster found graduate degrees a waste of money and said a CPA trumps a master’s. Both can be right for different people.

How Do You Increase Your Tax Accountant Salary?

You can act on most of this, in a practical order.

  1. Earn the CPA. Robert Half names it for senior and manager roles, and so does the senior tax manager posting.

  2. Build a specialty. Transfer pricing, financial markets and real estate, and international tax all appear in postings.

  3. Ask your employer about tuition support before you enroll. It changes the math for a master’s more than anything else you can do.

  4. Compare total pay. A bonus or a shorter commute can matter as much as a higher base.

  5. Check your state’s median in the table below, so you know what’s typical where you live.

See what each rung involves in the masters in taxation jobs overview, and check the enrolled agent salary guide if you’re weighing that credential. For the full list of degrees, see the best master’s in taxation programs.
