Verdict
Our Verdict on the M.Acc.
Rutgers Business School teaches its Master of Accountancy (MAcc) in Taxation as a 30-credit, part-time hybrid. Classes are live-streamed from the Newark classroom and recorded for review, and the school says the degree satisfies the 150-hour requirement for the CPA exam.
It's designed for busy, working professionals in the New York and New Jersey area. You attend class in person on the Newark campus or join the same session through video conferencing, and a selection of core courses also meets on nights and weekends at the New Brunswick campus. Rutgers reports that 95% of the program's students are employed while they study, and the schedule reflects that.
Ideal candidates hold a bachelor's or master's degree with an accounting background, or have practiced in taxation, and no admissions test scores are required. A program director who is a tenured professor, an attorney and a holder of a Master of Laws (LLM) in taxation leads the program, and the course list runs from corporate and partnership taxation to estates, financial instruments and state and local tax.

Curriculum
What You Will Study
Core courses total 17 credits and electives total 13. The core includes Federal Income Taxation, which covers the sources of tax law, income realization and recognition, and tax accounting methods, along with Corporate Income Taxation, which follows a corporation from organization and financing through distributions, redemptions and liquidation.
Partnership Taxation covers formation, special allocations and basis adjustments, and Tax Practice and Procedures covers tax research sources, court appeals, penalties and professional ethics. You also take Business Law for Managers and Entrepreneurs, and you choose between Ethics in Business and Regulation of Tax Practice, which examines the obligations of preparers, litigators, planners and government lawyers.
Electives let you go deeper. Advanced Corporate Taxation tackles tax-free reorganizations, and Consolidated Returns covers the federal group regulations. Other options include International Tax I and II, Federal Estate and Gift Taxation, Federal Income Taxation of Trusts and Estates, Pension and Profit-Sharing Plans, Tax-Exempt Entities and Taxation of Financial Instruments, which covers swaps, caps, collars and hedging.
State and local specialists can take State & Local Tax and its Constitutional Issues companion, and a federal tax research course builds the skills to advise clients. Recorded classes let you review lectures and make up sessions on your own time, so a missed evening doesn't set you back. Undergraduates who use the Gateway path start while they finish their bachelor's degree, and Rutgers recommends beginning that application three semesters before you graduate.

Format
How the Hybrid Format Works
The program is hybrid and part-time, and classes are synchronous. Courses are live-streamed from the classroom in real time, so you can attend in person on the Newark campus or off-site through video conferencing. Rutgers describes this as flexibility to attend class wherever it's most convenient. Classes are recorded, which lets you review lectures or make up a missed session on your own time.
Exams are held in person. A selection of core courses meets at the New Brunswick campus on nights and weekends, giving you a second location. Rutgers Business School's career team, with a dedicated counselor and a career management system that includes video interview practice and job postings, is available to you as well.
