Verdict
Our Verdict on the MTax
Weber State University's Master of Taxation is a 30-credit public-university degree that Weber says is the only Master of Taxation in Utah. Late-afternoon and evening classes, three start terms a year and an identical online track make it workable if you're already holding a tax job.
The Master of Taxation (MTax) sits in the Goddard School of Business and Economics at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. The Goddard School is dual accredited by AACSB, an honor Weber says only 2% of business schools worldwide earn. You take 1 to 5 courses per semester, and you can finish as quickly as a year.
Weber says its coursework is identical for in-person and online delivery, so you get the same program whichever track you're on. The school also points to small class sizes, which it says mean more time with highly qualified professors who bring real-world scenarios to the classroom.
Admission asks for a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution, a grade point average of at least 3.0 overall and in the last 60 credit hours, and a resume, and leveling courses may be required.
Credentials
Which Certifications It Prepares You For
The program is part of an AACSB dual-accredited business school. The Goddard School reports that employers including Deloitte, Eide Bailly, Forvis, Grant Thornton, HCA Healthcare, Squire and the Treasury Inspector General hire its graduates, across public accounting, government and private industry. In figures Weber reported to mba.com, 99% of graduates were offered employment within three months, and the average class size is 38.
A GradDegree analysis of College Scorecard data found that taxation graduates from Weber State earn a median of $82,325 four years out, about 44% higher than the school-wide median. If you're planning to sit for the CPA exam, the program lists CPA exam preparation as elective credit.

Curriculum
What You Will Study
Five courses, 15 credit hours, are required of every MTax student. Tax Research and Procedure teaches techniques in effective tax research, planning and communication, with a discussion of tax policy. Accounting for Income Taxes sits beside Advanced Individual Taxation, which digs into the alternative minimum tax, loss limitations, real estate transactions, stock options, employment taxes and charitable contributions.
Advanced Corporate Taxation covers corporate formations, operations, distributions, liquidations and S corporations, and Advanced Partnership Taxation covers the same ground for partnerships and limited liability companies (LLCs). Then you'll choose at least one restricted elective of three credits from five tax topics, including International Taxation, which looks at inbound and outbound transactions and tax treaties, and Mergers, Acquisitions and Consolidations, which covers tax-free reorganizations, affiliated groups and consolidated returns.
Other electives include State and Local Tax, Gifts, Estates, Trusts and Real Estate Taxation, and Retirement Plans. The remaining 12 hours can come from other MTax or Master of Accountancy (MAcc) courses, and with approval you can count up to 6 hours of internship, CPA exam preparation or study abroad.

Length
How Long It Takes
The program is 30 credit hours, and you decide how fast to move by taking between one and five courses a semester. Weber says you can finish as quickly as a year, and the catalog expects a minimum of two semesters of full-time study for a student with a bachelor's degree in accounting.
You can enter in the fall, spring or summer, with application deadlines of August 1, December 1 and April 1. Advanced Corporate Taxation is typically taught in the spring, with summer blocks offered too, so it's smart to map the required courses against the term you start. If you're studying part time, you just take fewer courses per semester and stretch the same 30 credits over more terms.
Cost
Tuition and Fees
Weber State is a public university, and the per-credit graduate charge it reports to federal data is $994. Multiplied across the 30 credits, that gives you a starting estimate for tuition, and the Weber State bursar page publishes the full Master of Taxation tuition schedules.
Scholarships can take the number down further. Tuition waivers and private scholarships are awarded three times a year, so you can apply for each upcoming semester. Because you can take one course at a time, you can also spread the cost across more terms and keep working.

Online
The Online Format
Weber offers the MTax online for students outside Davis and Weber Counties, while students in those counties attend in person at WSU Davis. In-person classes meet in the late afternoons and evenings for your convenience, with a single lecture per class per week. If you're an online student, you can join lectures in real time or watch the recordings later, and the coursework is identical across both tracks.
That means if you're outside those counties, you get the same courses as someone sitting in the Davis classroom. Career services come through the Goddard School Career Center, and you also get direct access to Goddard's alumni network, with many Weber graduates at large organizations.

What Students and Graduates Say
Outside sources describe Weber's MTax mostly in numbers, and GradDegree's College Scorecard earnings comparison is the clearest example. On mba.com, the business-school admissions site where programs describe themselves, Weber says faculty members bring real-world scenarios to the classroom and reports an average of 4 years of work experience among its students.
And the Goddard School describes its MTax as the only Master of Taxation program in Utah, adding that few programs in the world, let alone in Utah, can match its combination of quality, convenience and connection.
