Verdict

Our Verdict on the M.S.

Fordham's Master of Science in Professional Taxation is a 30-credit degree you can take fully remotely in live online classes, finish in as few as 12 months, and shape with four electives of your own choosing.

Fordham teaches this degree through its Gabelli School of Business in the Bronx, and since Fall 2023 every tax course has run online in live, synchronous sessions. You attend class at set times with your professors and classmates, so you're not working through recordings alone.

The faculty mix full-time professors with adjunct instructors who work in New York City's financial sector, so many of the people teaching you handle tax questions for a living. The school describes its classes as focused on current tax law and on solving real-world problems. You don't need an accounting background to start, which means it's a workable move for people coming from liberal arts or general business degrees.

Credentials

Accreditation and Where It Leads

Fordham says the program may help business undergraduates meet the credit criteria to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam, and that its courses help those taking the tax discipline part of the exam after 2023. On outcomes, the school reports that graduates have been hired for taxation positions at firms including PwC, Deloitte, KPMG, E&Y, Citibank, Morgan Stanley and CBS.

Graduates also work in tax departments within corporations and smaller companies. The school adds that former students tend to hire Gabelli School graduates, because they know the program's rigor first-hand. Fordham's taxation master's graduates post median earnings of $128,385 in the College Scorecard.

Fit

Who It Fits

Who It Fits

  • Career changers from liberal arts or business: the program doesn't require an undergraduate accounting degree, and a three-credit individual and business entity taxation course covers the basics of U.S. tax first.
  • Working professionals who want weekday flexibility: part-time students can take classes one day per week, and all tax courses are online.
  • People who want a fast route: the full-time, three-term structure can be completed in 12 months.
  • Students who already know their niche: four electives can be any tax course or any advanced-level accounting course, so you can lean toward estate, international or small business tax.
  • Anyone targeting New York City employers: the faculty work in the city's financial sector, and graduates have been hired by firms the school names.

Curriculum

What You Will Study

The degree is ten courses and 30 credits: six required tax courses and four electives. The required courses are Corporate Taxation, Partnerships, Tax Planning for Individuals, International Tax and Accounting, Tax Accounting, and IT and Data Analytics for Taxation. The last of those, IT and Data Analytics for Taxation, adds a technology angle to the core.

The bulletin lists a learning goal that students will research and apply tax and analytics to resolve taxation issues, along with an emphasis on communication, creative problem-solving and strategic vision. For electives you can pick any tax course or any advanced-level accounting course, and the school suggests areas such as corporate tax, international tax, small business tax, estate tax or gift tax.

The Professional Practice Research Seminar can also count as an elective. Fordham says the freedom to follow your own interests through electives is a feature that sets its program apart.

Length

How Long It Takes

You have two schedule choices. Full-time students follow a three-term structure and can finish in as little as 12 months. Part-time students spread the 30 credits over a longer stretch, such as two years, and the school notes they can take classes on only one day per week.

Each of the ten courses carries three credits, so you can plan your pace one course at a time. If you haven't studied U.S. tax, add the three-credit prerequisite, ACGB 7184 Individual and Business Entity Taxation, before the required courses.

Cost

How Much It Costs at $2,303 a Credit

Tuition is $2,303 per credit for students who entered from Fall 2023 onward, using the 2026-27 rate. Across 30 credits that comes to $69,090. Fees are $128 general and $249 technology per term. There's also a one-time $3,939 enrichment fee in the first term for new MS students.

Fordham also takes part in the Deloitte Foundation Accounting Scholars Program, which provides a limited number of full scholarships covering 100% of tuition and academic fees, excluding books and living expenses, for selected students going on to a fifth-year master's in accounting or taxation.

The school states the scholarship can help students meet the 150-credit hour requirement for CPA eligibility.
