Verdict
Our Verdict on the M.S.
Strayer University's Master of Science in Accounting with a taxation concentration is a 100% online degree made of 12 courses at $1,715 each. You study in 11-week terms, choose how many courses to take at a time and finish with three tax courses and a graduate accounting capstone.
Strayer builds this degree in two parts. Nine core courses cover the accounting and business base, from financial accounting and cost accounting to auditing, accounting information systems, economics, finance, commercial law and quantitative methods. Then you add a three-course taxation concentration that moves from individual tax to organizational tax to international tax.
Every course is worth 4.5 quarter credit hours, so the full degree comes to 54 quarter credit hours. You take everything online, and the school describes the program as one you can complete from where you live, on your time. Institutional accreditation comes from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).
Cost
Tuition and Fees
The school lists 12 courses at $1,715 per course, which adds up to $20,580 in tuition. Other charges are a $65 technology fee each term, a $150 one-time degree conferral fee and a $100 resource kit per course. Strayer offers a few ways to bring the price down. Its Alumni Master's Scholarship takes $4,000 off a master's degree for alumni who keep a GPA of 2.5 or greater.
The school also advertises 50% off tuition when you enroll in two master's courses, with eligibility rules that apply. If you're bringing four or more transfer courses, the school's cost estimator says you may be eligible for a $5,000 scholarship. And if your employer is one of Strayer's corporate partners, you may qualify for tuition savings through that arrangement.

Curriculum
What You Will Study
The taxation concentration is three courses. ACC 555, Individual Tax Research and Planning, is a comprehensive study of the federal income tax structure and applies income tax accounting to problems faced by individual taxpayers and proprietorships. ACC 565, Organizational Tax Research and Planning, moves into corporate and partnership taxation and adds estate and gift taxes, fiduciary accounting, tax-exempt entities and qualified and nonqualified plans.
ACC 568, International Tax Planning and Research, surveys the tax systems of countries on several continents and works through partnership and corporate planning, joint ventures and consolidated returns filed in the United States.
The core adds the rest of the accounting picture. ACC 557 covers the accounting cycle, financial statements and ratio analysis. ACC 560, Cost Accounting, focuses on cost control, budgeting and profit planning.
ACC 562, Advanced Auditing, looks at professional standards, ethics, internal control and statistical sampling. ACC 564, Accounting Information Systems, applies systems analysis to the accounting process. Outside accounting you take Managerial Economics and Globalization, Financial Management, Commercial Law and Quantitative Methods.
The degree ends with ACC 599, the Graduate Accounting Capstone. You apply what you learned across financial and managerial accounting, forensic accounting and auditing to real-world business cases involving complex accounting decisions.

Length
How Long It Takes
The degree requires 54 quarter credit hours: 40.5 from nine core courses and 13.5 from the three-course concentration. Each course lasts 11 weeks. In the school's cost estimator you choose either two or three courses a term, and the school lists three or four terms a year, so your pace depends on how many you take and how many terms you use.
Twelve courses at two a term would take six terms, and at three a term would take four terms. Up to four eligible classes can transfer in from a prior college or university, which shortens the path if you've earned graduate credit.
