Verdict

Our Verdict on the M.S.

This on-campus master's in Coral Gables takes 10 months full time, welcomes students from any undergraduate major, and builds Certified Public Accountant exam preparation into the required courses.

The Master of Science in Taxation at the University of Miami is an on-campus program in the business school, and it starts each August. Full-time students finish in 10 months. If you work, a professional part-time track stretches the same curriculum, course sequence and faculty over 24 months.

The school designed the program for students from any undergraduate background, not only accounting majors, and most of its students intend to become Certified Public Accountants (CPAs). Courses range from Tax Research and Partnership Taxation to Introduction to Accounting Analytics, and merit scholarships are considered for everyone admitted.

Neither the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) nor the GRE is required for admission.

Fit

Who It Fits

  • Miami undergraduates: an accelerated path lets you complete your bachelor's and master's degrees and make significant progress on the CPA exam within 4½ years.
  • Working professionals: the part-time professional track runs 24 months with the same faculty and course sequence as the full-time program.
  • Students drawn to data: electives include Python Programming, Dashboard Tools for Visual Analytics, Applied Regression Analysis and Machine Learning for Data Analytics.

Curriculum

What You Will Study

The required list opens with Tax Research, Income Taxation and Business Entities, Corporate Taxation I, Partnership Taxation and Accounting for Income Taxes. International Accounting and Taxation, Business Combinations Complex Estimates, Introduction to Accounting Analytics and Executive Problem Solving, a course in critical thinking and strategic communication, fill out the rest.

Each of these courses is worth two credits. CPA Review I is a required course that carries zero credits, so exam preparation is part of the plan itself. The electives let you go further into tax with Corporate Taxation II, Seminar in Taxation, Issues in Tax Policy and Taxation of Multinational Corporations, or branch into Forensic Accounting, Internal Auditing, Personal Financial Planning and The Public Corporation: Legal Perspectives.

If you lean toward data work, you can choose from Python Programming, Dashboard Tools for Visual Analytics, Data Acquisition and Preparation, Applied Regression Analysis I and Machine Learning for Data Analytics I. The Master of Science in Taxation is designed for students interested in careers in taxation.

Length

How Long It Takes

It's 30 credit hours. Full-time students finish in 10 months, and part-time professionals take 24 months. Everyone starts in August. If your bachelor's degree isn't in accounting, you complete 42 semester hours: the 12-credit Core Accounting Program plus the 30 credits of the taxation master's.

That summer session is six weeks long, made up of two three-week modules, and it begins in July. After it, full-time students may graduate in as little as two semesters. Miami undergraduates who take the accelerated path complete both degrees within 4½ years, and they take an approved CPA review course the summer after senior year and are expected to pass part or all of the exam.

Cost

How Much It Costs at $2,255 a Credit

Tuition is $2,255 per credit hour, the rate the school lists for the 2027-2028 academic year, which comes to $67,653 for the 30-credit program. Every admitted applicant is considered for merit-based scholarships, there's no separate application process for those awards, and you learn the scholarship decision when you're admitted.

Test scores aren't mandatory, but the school says submitting an unofficial score can help you secure the maximum merit-based scholarship. If you come from a non-accounting background, the 12-credit Core Accounting Program adds to the 30 credits.

30 credits at $2,255 a credit comes to $67,650 in tuition, before fees.
