Verdict

Our Verdict on the M.S.

Texas A&M University-Kingsville offers a 30-credit Master of Science in Taxation (MST) that's fully online, asynchronous and accelerated. Six accounting courses, including an energy tax class on oil and gas, sit beside four business courses that broaden your résumé.

The College of Business at Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) delivers the MST as a 30-credit-hour, fully online, asynchronous accelerated graduate program. The school describes it as giving a comprehensive and specialized understanding of tax law applicable to any size firm, and it's designed for people with backgrounds in tax, accounting, finance or even law.

Your curriculum combines advanced tax coursework with graduate-level economics and finance and finishes with a strategic management capstone. Because the course work is asynchronous, you complete assignments on your own schedule and still move through the degree on an accelerated timeline.

Cost

Tuition and Fees

Federal education data put TAMUK's graduate charge at $609 per credit, and that's the figure to work from for your 30 credits. The College of Business also runs a graduate scholarships page for its master's students, so ask the graduate office which awards an MST student can apply for.

Fit

Who It Fits

Who It Fits

  • Working accountants and finance staff: the asynchronous format lets you study around a job, and a student in the college's online Master of Business Administration (MBA) program says Sunday due dates left room for a part-time job.
  • Professionals in or near the energy industry: Energy Accounting and Taxation covers oil and gas tax accounting, including a tax project you build on a global oil and gas tax report from Ernst and Young.
  • Students building toward Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensure: your coursework may count toward the 150 semester credit hours associated with the education requirements, subject to state board rules.
  • Strong undergraduates: if you're an academically qualified undergraduate, you may be eligible for an accelerated pathway that permits completion of the MST on an expedited basis.

Curriculum

What You Will Study

The degree is built from six accounting classes and four business breadth classes, ten three-credit courses in all. On the tax side, Advanced Auditing and Taxation teaches you to assess audit risk, including tax account risks, and to plan an audit; each student writes a tax case paper based on audit-related cases posted in the online course site.

Federal Partnership and Limited Liability Company (LLC) Taxation surveys the federal income tax laws that apply to partnerships and LLC entities, covering formation, operations and basis, plus distributions, transfers of interest and terminations. Advanced Income Tax Problems turns to regulations that affect partnerships and corporations, the preparation of federal income tax returns for those businesses, and federal gift and estate tax.

Energy Accounting and Taxation is the distinctive course. You cover financial and managerial accounting for upstream oil and gas operations, reserves, the successful efforts and full cost methods, production activities, project analysis and oil and gas tax accounting. Government and Non-Profit Accounting covers the principles and practice of fund accounting for governmental and nonprofit organizations, and Accounting Ethics applies ethical theory to integrity, objectivity and independence.

Your business breadth classes are Marketing Management and Value Creation, Economics and Managerial Decision Making, and Financial Management and Sustainability. The capstone, Strategic Management, includes a case competition, and you take it in the last block of the program.

Length

How Long It Takes

The MST is a 30-credit program made of ten three-credit courses, and the college describes it as accelerated. The College of Business graduate page lays out graduate study as three semesters a year built from eight-week blocks, and you take the Strategic Management capstone, with its case competition, in the last block of the program.

If you're a qualified undergraduate who meets the college's standards, you may use an accelerated pathway to finish the degree on an expedited basis.

Online

How the Online Classes Work

The MST is fully online and asynchronous, so there aren't any live sessions to attend and you work through each course on your own schedule. Course materials sit in Blackboard, the online course site, which is also where the audit-related cases for the Advanced Auditing and Taxation paper are posted.

Because nothing is tied to a set class time, you can hold a full-time job and still keep pace with the program's accelerated blocks.
