The best taxation master's programs in Florida depend on whether you hold a law degree, an accounting background or neither. Programs range from the University of Florida and the University of Miami to Florida Atlantic and Florida Gulf Coast. Read the board's credit rules first, because Florida treats tax law courses and accounting courses differently when it counts your hours.
The picks, cards and table below use short forms for the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), the Juris Doctor (J.D.) law degree and the Master of Laws (LL.M.).

Studying Taxation in Florida
Florida licenses CPAs through the Florida Board of Accountancy. To sit for the exam you need 120 semester hours, including 24 upper-division accounting hours (three of them in taxation) and 24 upper-division general business hours.
For the license itself, the statute asks for at least 150 semester hours, including a bachelor's or higher degree, with a concentration in accounting and business, plus one year of work experience verified by a licensed CPA. Elementary accounting doesn't count, even at the graduate level, and the board says its staff can't judge your courses by phone, fax or email.
You submit transcripts for an official evaluation instead. Among law school courses, the board says taxation courses are generally the only ones it can credit as accounting. So a tax master's can add accounting hours, and a tax LL.M. can do the same if you hold a J.D., as long as the courses don't repeat ones you've already taken.

How We Chose These Programs
A program qualifies when its school is based in Florida. Where a school publishes a separate in-state rate we show it beside the non-resident rate.
- School based in Florida
- In-state rate shown when the school publishes one
- Scored on the same eight factors as every list and ranked inside its degree level
Scores are the weighted sum of eight factors (Tax Specialization 15%, Tax Subject Coverage 15%, Hands-On Tax Practice 10%, Cost 20%, Graduate Earnings 10%, Credential Alignment 10%, Track Record 10%, Program Reputation 10%), version 2.0. The methodology page shows the rubric for each factor.

Check Which Florida Courses the Board Counts as Accounting
The Florida board keeps a strict list, and a tax master's helps because taxation sits inside it. For the exam, 24 of your upper-division hours must be accounting, including three in taxation.
Elementary accounting subjects don't count, even at the graduate level, so advanced tax coursework is what you want to look for, not a refresher. Those 120 hours only get you to the exam, because the license itself asks for 150.
Florida Gulf Coast University's M.S. in Accounting and Taxation says it satisfies Florida's CPA education requirements. The University of Miami's 30-credit M.S. in Taxation builds CPA exam preparation in through a required zero-credit review course, and it welcomes students from any undergraduate major.
The board evaluates transcripts rather than answering course questions informally, and it won't credit a course that duplicates one you've already taken. Ask each school for a course-by-course outline, then compare it with the board's education page before you enroll.
Use a Florida Tax LL.M. When You Already Hold a Law Degree
Law school courses are the board's special case. It says taxation courses are generally the only law courses it can credit as accounting, and it treats Federal Taxation I and II as duplicates of the same classes in an accounting program. A tax LL.M. is therefore the natural fit for a lawyer who wants tax coursework to count.
The University of Florida's LL.M. in Taxation is 26 credits, and nearly every course is taught by full-time tax faculty. The school streams classes live rather than recording them, so you can join from Gainesville or from home and switch formats from one semester to the next.
UF's international tax version puts at least 13 credits into cross-border work, including treaties and transfer pricing, alongside classmates from 12 countries. The University of Miami's 26-credit LL.M. lets you note a concentration on your transcript in business tax, international tax or high net worth planning, and weekly Tax Talks connect you to Miami's tax community.
Compare Florida Resident Rates With Flat Rates
Florida's programs publish prices in different ways, so line them up before you compare. Florida Gulf Coast charges Florida residents $373.38 per credit hour. Florida Atlantic's Executive Master of Taxation charges $900 per credit hour, the same for Florida residents, out-of-state students and international students, so you know your rate whatever your address.
The University of Florida lists $815.81 per credit for its Master of Laws programs, and the University of Miami's M.S. in Taxation lists $2,255 per credit. Those rates sit beside different credit counts: Miami's M.S. is 30 credits, UF's LL.M. programs are 26 and Florida Gulf Coast's degree is 30.
Multiply the rate by the credits, then add fees. Ask whether the rate changes if you study part of the program online or in person, since Florida Gulf Coast lets you choose per course. See the cheapest master's in taxation programs for a national price comparison.
Fit a Florida Taxation Master's Around Saturdays and Work
Several Florida programs are designed for people who already have jobs. Florida Atlantic's Saturday lectures stream live and stay available as recordings around the clock, and you can mix online and in-person sessions at no extra cost. Your cohort follows one fixed sequence with a guaranteed schedule, and an advisor handles registration.
Florida Gulf Coast lets you choose face-to-face or live online sessions for some or all courses, and you can change your mind from one course to the next. An optional analytics concentration adds Big Data and Data Mining plus Business Intelligence and Visualization.
The University of Florida's international tax LL.M. can be done full time in Gainesville in two semesters, and part-time students can attend in person or through live-streamed classes. The University of Miami's M.S. can be finished in 10 months full time. Choose the format that matches your week, and ask each program for a sample term schedule before you commit.
